Tesla 4680 Battery Isses Will Be Fully Fixed By September 2024

Article by Steve LeVine of The Information suggests that Tesla is preparing to validate it’s engineering approach for high volume manufacturing of a new version of the 4680 by September.

That involves:

1) Finally implementing a dry coated cathode

2) Scaling up a fix to an issue where the jelly roll would collapse into the core of the cell

Tesla has apparently produced one battery pack already with these new battery cells for a Cybertruck.

And, the goal is to have these battery packs in volume production by the end of the year.

Thoughts from Joran of the Limiting Factor Youtube:

This aligns with my expectations.

As I said a couple of times already, I expect the 4680 cell that I tear down from Sandy Munro to again have a dry coated anode and a wet coated cathode.

However, I also said there were indications from suppliers and people at Tesla that Tesla was getting close to solving the dry-coated cathode.

So, progress continues on the 4680, but it’s gruelling.

Note: Tesla has said that they expect their in-house 4680 battery packs to be cheaper than comparable battery packs from suppliers by the end of the year.

  1. This is great news, Brian. Thanks!

The progress seems slow, but in reality, with the dry process in mass production, Tesla will have achieved something others have been working on for more than a decade. Sometimes, I take these incremental achievements for granted.

    But I shouldn’t.

    These things are very difficult…
